A portrait of Iranian film editor Bahram Dehqan

Born in 1954 in the Iranian city of Shiraz, Bahram Dehqan, also known as Bahram Dehqani, is a distinguished film editor who has made a significant impact on Iranian cinema.  

With over 70 film edits to his name, Dehqan’s career spans multiple decades, during which he has refined the art of editing and collaborated on some of the most celebrated films in the country.

He holds a filmmaking degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he gained a solid foundation in film production that would later inform his prolific career.

Dehqan's journey in cinema began in the 1980s when he contributed to Film magazine before fully immersing himself in film editing.

Over the years, he has expanded his expertise beyond editing to include assistant directing, sound mixing, sound editing, trailer production, and even script consulting.

His brother, Khosro Dehqan, is also a noted film critic and screenwriter, further cementing the family's close ties to the world of cinema.

Throughout his career, Bahram has worked on a variety of acclaimed films that have left a lasting mark on audiences.

Some of his notable projects include ‘A Time to Love’, ‘The Night Bus’, ‘Every Night Loneliness’, ‘African Violet’, ‘Barefoot in Paradise’, ‘Repression’, ‘Tsunami’, and ‘Just 6.5’. These films not only highlight his skillful editing but also reflect the diversity of genres and styles he has mastered, from family dramas to intense thrillers.

Dehqan's impressive contributions have not gone unnoticed, earning him numerous awards and honors over the years.

He won his first Crystal Simorgh for best editing at the 20th Fajr Film Festival in 2001 for the film ‘Poisonous Mushroom’.  

He later received the Golden Statue for best editing at the 8th Celebration House of Cinema in 2004 for ‘The Father’s Farm’.

His innovative use of modern technology in film editing was recognized with an award for ‘Parsa in the Mist’ at the Cinema Press Festival in 2006.

Dehqan continued to dominate the Fajr Film Festival in the following years, earning best editing awards for ‘The Sallow Yellow Sky’ and ‘Reparation’ at the 31st edition, ‘Life and a Day’ at the 34th, ‘Cold Sweat’ at the 36th, and ‘Just 6.5’ at the 37th. The latter film also brought him another Golden Statue at the 21st Celebration House of Cinema in 2019.

Some of Dehqan’s significant works include editing films such as ‘Asphyxia’, ‘The Villa Residents’, ‘The Domestic Killer’, ‘The Moon in the Forest’, ‘Negar’, ‘Crazy Rook’, ‘360 Degrees’, ‘The Sweet Taste of Imagination’, ‘I Am Diego Maradona’, ‘Closer’, ‘Reparation’, ‘The Wooden Bridge’ and ‘Here Without Me’.

His work has also reached a wider audience through iFilm English TV, where some of his projects, such as ‘The Sweet Taste of Imagination’, ‘So Close, So Far Away’, and ‘Gold and Copper’, have been broadcast and warmly received.  

With a career defined by a commitment to cinematic excellence and a deep understanding of storytelling through editing, Bahram Dehqan continues to shape the landscape of Iranian film.
